Our Belarus Meal
Our Global meals continue with Belarus!
The meal consisted of Borscht Soup (Beet Soup with potatoes), Mushroom stuffed Draniki (Potato Pancakes/hash browns stuffed with mushrooms), Rye Bread and Strawberry Kisiel (Thick Strawberry Puree).
For the Borscht, we decided to roast the vegetables before adding them to the stock which really brought out the flavors. It was delicious! I made the rye bread from scratch and watching the bread rise was fun. Homemade rye bread is really good! I don’t have much experience baking so I’m always excited when things turn out!
We paired the meal with a couple vodka drinks made from authentic Russian vodka given to us by our good friends Dmitriy and Yelena. Dmitriy is from Belarus. Yelena made us a meal of Russian cuisine earlier this year (I know Belarus is not Russia :). See pictures below.
Meal Prepared by Yelena!
We went to our friend Dmitry and Yelena’s house and she made us a delicious meal of foods she said were customary Russian foods. Everything was delicious!
About Belarus
Belarus is famous for its beautiful nature and is often referred to as a land of beautiful lakes (with over 11,000 lakes), virgin forests, and rare species of plants and animals. The capital of Minsk also looks beautiful with it’s magnificent cathedrals!
The national mascot is the European Buffalo – brought back from the brink of extinction in the early 50s, two European bison were released into the Białowieża Forest. Today there are around 600 to be spotted here.
The name Rus is often combined with its Latin forms Russia and Ruthenia, thus Belarus is often referred to as White Russia or White Ruthenia. The official language is Belarusian, but many citizens only speak Russian.
