Bolivia 🇧🇴

Our Bolivian Meal

Our Bolivian meal was Bolivian Avocado & Tomato Salad, La Sopa de Mani (Bolivian Peanut & Beef Soup), La Llajua/Llajwa Hot Sauce, Corn on the cob with fried cheese and Helado de Canela (Cinnamon Sorbet). The Avocado salad was like deconstructed guacamole. So good and easy. I really liked the peanut and beef soup but Rob was not a huge fan. We used to say we didn’t like spicy foods but are learning more and more about different levels of spice and how all peppers have different flavors.

About Bolivia

Bolivia is a country in South America with the Andes mountains in the West and Eastern Lowlands in the Amazon basin. It’s population includes Amerindians, Mestizos, Europeans, Asians, and Africans.
It’s common for Bolivian women to wear brown bowler hats. According to https://juliahammond.blog/2017/04/12/bolivias-bowler-hats/ “The hat is an easy way of determining the wearer’s marital status: if she wears it straight, she’s married, but if it sits at an angle, she’s available.  So that hat plays a critical role in the La Paz social scene.”

North Yungas road, known as “Death Road”, was the only route between the executive capital of La Paz and and the Yungas region of Bolivia until 2006. It is a 43-mile switchback with fog, landslides, cascades, and cliffs that drop 2,000 feet at every turn. The road seldom gets any wider than 10 feet and there are many crosses displayed for those who died on this dangerous road. Nearly 300 drivers were killed on this road every year until 1994. Since then an alternate route was constructed and North Yungaa road was improved with second lane, new pavement, drainage systems, and guardrails.

In this Foder’sTravel article Marina describes her “adrenaline-pumping” bike tour on Death Road.
