Rijeka, Croatia

Our first port of call was in Rijeka, Croatia. The cruise ship arrived at the port at 8AM and we disembarked to do a self-guided tour of the city and Trsat Fortress. The climb to Trsat Fortress was 538 steps, so we decided to conquer that first.

We passed by the Clock Tower and shopping district on our way to the steps. There was a bit of construction in the area, but we managed to navigate through it, but one of the construction signs caught our eye because it looked like “No Zombies”! LOL.

The Petar Kružić stairs were built in 1531 and are still in great shape, but we’re not, so we had to take a few breaks on the way up. Just before the top was a water faucet with cold refreshing water – a welcoming break!

We then stopped briefly at the Franciscan Church and Monastery of Our Lady of Trsat before crossing the street to Trsat Fortress and exploring. The fortress was built in the early 13th century and had fell into disrepair before being restored in 1960.

On our way back down to the shopping district, we stopped by the Peek & Poke Computer Museum. They had an impressive collection of old computer and gaming systems from the past 50 years. Many of which Betsy and I have worked on! What’s even more impressive, is they had several still operational and you could play games on some (of course Jackson kicked Grandpa’s butt in Mortal Combat).

We walked through the shopping district and local market, then stopped at King’s Caffe for some lunch. A quick stop at the mall, then back to the ship.
