Corfu, Greece

On our “Scenic Island & Flavors” excursion we first stopped in Lakones, a small seaside town. Our bus continued up the slopes of the mountain to a little restaurant where we tasted the famous ouzo liquor and had some Greek appetizers. The bus barely made it through the narrow streets, but the view was amazing! Dani bought some Baklava that was delicious!!

We stopped at the monastery of Agia Paraskevi. Their tiny church was beautiful inside. We bought some olive oil from the shop the nuns ran to raise money for the church.

We then visited a Koum Kouat distillery where we sampled several liquors and candies. The Koum Kouat citrus fruit is a variety which only grows in Corfu and is used to make one of the island’s most famous products, a liqueur with the same name, plus fruit preserved sweets.

Our tour ended in the main square of Corfu town. We walked past some historical sites, such as the Old Fortress of Corfu, the Bell Tower of the Annunziata Church, and the Palace of St. Michael and St. George. We then walked through the shopping district and picked up some souvenirs while Dani and Jackson located the Post Office to mail their postcards back to the States. We just had to get some authentic Greek Gyros for lunch!
